The elementary school in the US, where a 6-year-old boy shot a teacher on Friday, will be shuttered all this week.

In a statement, the Virginia school said this was to give its students and families “time to heal”.

The teacher, Abby Zwerner, said to be 25, was left seriously injured; she is now in a stable condition, said Richneck Elementary School, and talking to family and friends.

Unknown how the toddler, who is in police custody, came into possession of the weapon.

Officials stated that although there were metal detectors at the school, which has roughly 550 students and is located in Newport News, not every student was examined.

Police have declined to say what might have motivated the shooting. But Chief Steve Drew told reporters it come after an “altercation” in a first grade (ages six to seven) classroom and did not appear to be “accidental”.

Fifth-grader Novah Jones, who was in a different classroom, spoke about the moment her class was put on lockdown.

“We were doing math… An announcer came on, she was like: ‘Lockdown, I repeat lockdown,'” she told Media.

“I was scared… It was like my first lockdown and I didn’t know what to do, so I just hid under my desk like everybody was.”

She initially believed that a man with a gun was present inside the school. Later, she was pulled from her classroom and hauled to the gym before being transported home.

Ms. Zwerner responded selflessly to the incident, according to one parent, Steve Gonzalez, whose child was in the classroom at the time.

He said that after being struck by the bullet, “she screamed at her kids to run away”.
