Massive 6.8 earthquake affects Central America
The US Geological Survey and the Japan Meteorological Agency reported a magnitude 6.1 earthquake off the coast of Hokkaido in northern Japan on Saturday night.
There was no tsunami warning issued following the offshore tremor that hit the coastal cities of Kushiro and Nemuro.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in major Japanese media outlets.
The quake hit at 10:27 pm (13:27 GMT) at a depth of roughly 43 kilometers (27 miles), the USGS said.
An expert on public broadcaster NHK cautioned locals to be on the lookout for earthquakes for the next week.
Earthquakes are widespread in Japan, which is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of high seismic activity that spans Southeast Asia and the Pacific basin.
The country has tight construction laws in place to ensure that structures can withstand strong earthquakes, and emergency drills are held on a regular basis to prepare for a major jolt.
