One day after North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) called the Hwasong-15, the United States conducted air exercises with South Korea and Japan utilizing strategic bombers (ICBM).

The exercises on Sunday, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Service, showed off the partners’ “overwhelming” defense capabilities and readiness.

“[The exercises] strengthened the combined operation capability and affirmed the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of the Korean Peninsula and the implementation of extended deterrence,” South Korea’s military said in a statement.

According to a statement from Japan’s defense ministry, F-15 fighter jets were flown over the Sea of Japan alongside US B-1 bombers and F-16 fighters. Following the most recent North Korean missile’s landing within its Exclusive Economic Zone, it described the security environment as “increasingly severe.”

The long-range ballistic missile splashed down in the water off the west coast of Japan after North Korea threatened a retaliatory strike against the US and South Korean military exercises.

North Korea reportedly conducted a Hwasong-15 test launch on Saturday from Pyongyang’s airport, according to the official news agency.

Using the North Korean term for the Sea of Japan, official news agency reported that the missile travelled for slightly over an hour and covered a distance of 989 kilometers (615 miles) before “accurately reaching the pre-set spot in open waters of the East Sea of Korea.”

UN resolutions forbid North Korea from testing ballistic missiles of any range that, depending on their design, may also be fitted with a nuclear weapon.

It would be the missile’s first test in more than a month.

The Group of Seven, an organisation made up of the top seven economies in the world, denounced the test “in the strongest terms.”

The incident was referred to as a “blatant violation” of UN Security in a statement issued during a meeting of the G7 foreign ministers at the Munich Security Conference.
