At least 33 individuals were killed in a migrant shipwreck off the eastern coast of Italy‘s Calabria province.

Several remains were discovered in the water near Staccato di Cutro, a coastal resort in the province of Crotone.

The current provisional death toll of 33 will “certainly” grow.

“Several dead are reported among the migrants, (and) about 40 survivors,” the national firefighters’ department wrote on the Telegram messaging app, adding the migrants’ ship had run aground by the coast.

A source claimed more than 100 people were aboard the ship, another source said a baby and several children were among the dead.

According to Adnkronos, the ferry carrying migrants from Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan collided with rocks during heavy seas.

The Italian coast guard, which was reported to be on the site alongside firefighters and other police forces, could not be reached for comment immediately.

Italy is a major landing site for migrants attempting to enter Europe by sea. The so-called central Mediterranean route is regarded as one of the most perilous in the world.

According to the International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project, 20,333 individuals have perished or gone missing in the central Mediterranean since 2014.
