Austria to send aid to Turkey following second earthquake

Austria will send 84 soldiers from its Disaster Relief Unit to Turkey as of Tuesday to aid with the region’s rescue efforts.

The nation will also commit three million euros ($3.2 million) to aiding relief efforts on the ground.

Due to the scale and impact of Monday’s earthquake, Austria will “provide rapid humanitarian aid,” Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said in the news release.

“The terrible pictures that have reached us today from Turkey and Syria after the earthquakes show drastic damage and a large number of victims. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with the victims and their families,“ Nehammer added.

The Austrian Armed Forces’ disaster assistance mission is expected to last roughly 10 days, based on current preparations.

According to the administration, three rescue and recovery teams composed of specialists in logistics, medicine, and hygiene may be sent to two different search areas.

“We are standing with the people in Turkey and Syria in this difficult situation,” the Austrian chancellor said.
