DCI John Caldwell critically ill and sedated after he was shot
After being shot in front of his son, one of the most senior police officers John Caldwell in Northern Ireland is still gravely unwell and under heavy sedation in the hospital.
According to Police Service of Northern Ireland Chief Constable Simon Byrne, John Caldwell’s wife and kid were severely impacted by his shooting.
The 48-year-old was shot many times by two assailants on Wednesday in Omagh as he was loading footballs into his car.
On Friday morning, a fourth individual was detained in connection with the attempted homicide.
The 22-year-old is being questioned at Musgrave Serious Crime Suite after being detained in County Tyrone’s Coalisland neighborhood under the Terrorism Act.
Three men, aged 38, 45, and 47, who were detained on Thursday in Omagh and Coalisland are still being held.
On Friday, Mr. Byrne and the heads of Northern Ireland’s five major parties gave an update.
The chief constable and political leaders put on a united front, which Mr. Byrne said as a remarkable display of solidarity that revealed the “sheer sense of fury at this needless and terrible attack.”
The New IRA is the focus of the police inquiry into dissident republicans, but the police claim they are maintaining an open mind.

On Wednesday at around 00:00 GMT, the assailants approached him while he was coaching a Beragh Swifts practice at Youth Sport Omagh.
At the sports complex’s parking lot, children fled in horror as gunfire rang out.
According to authorities, the shooting was carried out by two gunmen who were clothed in dark clothing and fled the scene on foot.
They fired a barrage of gunfire, hitting at least two more vehicles.
