Death toll in Turkey and Syria earthquake crosses 23,000
The number of fatalities in Turkey as a result of the earthquakes on Monday has increased to 19,875, according to the nation’s disaster management agency.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, originally claimed that the accident had injured over 77,700 people.
3,377 people have died in Syria as a whole, making the overall death toll higher than 23,000 people.
Turkey will receive shelters, according to NATO.
In other locations, NATO members have decided to send semi-permanent housing facilities to Turkey to aid those who have been affected by the earthquake on Monday.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the decision, stating: “NATO stands in strong solidarity with our ally Turkey, and the deployment of these shelter facilities will help to save lives.
“NATO allies and partners are providing substantial support to the relief efforts, and we will continue to do all we can to assist those in need.”
According to the statement, the shelters that will be provided will include a variety of amenities, such as heating, power generators, and medical treatment rooms.
Additionally, it notes that hundreds of emergency responders from more than 20 NATO members and 30 nations are currently working on relief efforts.
