In Turkey and Syria, earthquake kills at least 1,500 lives
More than 1,500 people were killed and many more were injured when a strong earthquake struck Turkey early on Monday.
As the day broke, images revealing the disaster’s actual scope appeared. The earthquake caused entire city blocks to collapse, metal rods to be thrown across the streets, and vehicles to crash over.
Rescuers are currently attempting to liberate those who are buried beneath the rubble.
Combined death toll rises above 1,500 after devastating earthquake
A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that shook southern Turkey early on Monday left at least 1,504 people dead and thousands more injured in Turkey and Syria.
According to the Syrian state news agency , at least 592 people have died throughout Syria overall, with 371 of those deaths occurring primarily in the provinces of Aleppo, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus. Local media also reported 1,089 wounded.
In the meantime, the “White Helmets” organization, also known as the Syria Civil Defense, claimed at least 221 fatalities and 419 wounded in north-west Syrian opposition-held territory.
The White Helmets stated on Twitter, “Hundreds still trapped under rubble.”
In a televised address on Monday, Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoan stated that at least 912 people had died and 5,385 had been injured.
While 45 countries, NATO, the EU, and the EU have all given assistance in the wake of the accident, rescuers are searching through the debris of the destroyed buildings for survivors.
