Sabina Aliyeva, the Ombudsman for Human Rights in Azerbaijan, has released a statement regarding the assault on the nation’s embassy in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The statement reads: “We strongly condemn the terrorist act committed against the Embassy of our country in the Islamic Republic of Iran this morning. As a result of this vile attack, Orkhan Asgarov, the head of the security service of the diplomatic mission, was killed while performing his official duties, and two employees of the Embassy were injured.

The primary serious transgression committed in this episode is against the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

As a result, in accordance with Article 22 of the Vienna Convention, the receiving State has a specific obligation to take the necessary precautions to ensure the mission operates normally as well as to protect the mission’s premises from damage and intrusion.

The 1973 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons, including Diplomatic Agents, is also gravely violated by this illegal act.

I pray that God would have pity on the Embassy employee who was killed while carrying out his official duties and was a victim of terrorism, one of the gravest threats to humanity.

I also pray that his family will have patience and that the injured will recover.

This bloody act of terrorism should be investigated by the Iranian Government as soon as possible, the criminals should be punished, and the obligations established by international binding documents should be fulfilled.”
