Convoy of aid enters Burkinabe town blocked by militants
For the first time in over five months, a convoy of 74 trucks hauling food has reached the village of Djibo in northern Burkina Faso.
In order to prevent attacks, supplies were being airlifted to the town, which has been the target of a de facto terrorist blockade for months.
“For the first time since November 2022, the northern town of Djibo has been supplied by road,” French public radio reported.
“It’s a real breath of fresh air,” a shopkeeper in Djibo was quoted as saying.
After a three-week journey, “braving roadside bombs and ambushes,” the convoy arrived on Tuesday, a security source told AFP.
In order to get the transitional authorities to address the security and humanitarian issues in the region, the town’s residents have been holding rallies.
An insurrection that began in Mali’s neighboring country of Burkina Faso in 2015 is being fought there.
