Ethiopian PM names TPLF chief as president of Tigray
The newly constituted interim administration in the northern province of Tigray will be led by Getachew Reda, a senior member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), according to Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Last week, Mr. Getachew was nominated by the TPLF, which waged a two-year civil war against the federal government.
Fighting claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, and the battle resulted in a major humanitarian disaster.
The US administration has accused both sides of committing war crimes.
The action is a component of the implementation of the South African peace accord that the TPLF and the federal government signed.
Up until regional elections are held under the control of the electoral commission, the interim regional administration will be in place. There is no definite date yet.
The TPLF was no longer classified as a terrorist organization by Ethiopia’s House of Peoples Representatives on Wednesday.
