‘I will keep speaking for those with no voice’ , says Gary Lineker
Gary Lineker has stated he will attempt to maintain speaking up for people with “no voice”, amid criticism over his tweets on the government’s asylum policy.
The Match of the Day host had remarked the wording setting out the plan was “very unlike to that employed by Germany in the 30s”.
Suella Braverman, the home secretary, voiced her disapproval of the comments.
The UK government announced its measures to prevent immigrants who enter the country illegally from requesting asylum on Tuesday.
The policy is a part of efforts to address an increase in the number of persons using tiny boats to cross the English Channel.
The presenter described it on Twitter as an “immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s”.
Ms. Braverman said on Wednesday morning his comments were disappointing.
She told media: “I’m disappointed, obviously. I think it’s unhelpful to compare our measures, which are lawful, proportionate and – indeed – compassionate, to 1930s Germany. I also think that we are on the side of the British people here.”
Later on Wednesday, Lineker tweeted: “Great to see the freedom of speech champions out in force this morning demanding silence from those with whom they disagree.”
He followed up shortly after with: “I have never known such love and support in my life than I’m getting this morning (England World Cup goals aside, possibly). I want to thank each and every one of you. It means a lot.
“I’ll continue to try and speak up for those poor souls that have no voice.”
Downing Street later said Lineker’s criticism of the new asylum policy was “not acceptable”.
Comparisons to Germany in the 1930s, according to Labor, “aren’t always the best approach to make” an argument.
Lineker, who has been a Match of the Day presenter since 1999, is the highest-paid celebrity at the media, with earnings of roughly £1.35 million in 2020–21.
He has accepted refugees into his house and has spoken out in favor of immigrant rights. Also, he has criticized previous Conservative administrations about subjects like Brexit.
In a tweet inquiring whether the Conservative Party intended to “give back their funds from Russian donors,” Lineker infringed impartiality standards, according to the reputed media outlet’s complaints unit in October.
The remarks followed a call from , the then-foreign secretary, for Premier League teams to skip the Champions League final in Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.
