Rule-breaking idea should have been evident, claims Johnson
Boris Johnson has continued his remarks, stressing that if the direction or rule-breaking was clear, it “must have been equally clear” to dozens of the highest-ranking officials and the current prime minister Rishi Sunak as well.
Johnson asserts that on the contrary, the overwhelming evidence shows that these people thought the advice was being followed.
According to Johnson, there is a “total silence” regarding evidence of anyone thinking that guidance had been broken.
He says it was “obvious that they were going against the guidance”, then “you’re not only accusing me of lying” but also accusing all those civil servants and advisors.
Johson says the committee are “not giving them a chance to explain themselves”, adding he doesn’t “think you seriously mean to accuse them or me of lying”.
Recall that earlier today, we saw confirmation of Dominic Cummings‘ account that he advised the prime minister against holding a garden party in May 2020 from No. 10’s former communications director.
Cummings can’t be trusted on this, according to Johnson.
At the start of the session the ex-PM swore to “tell the truth and nothing but the truth”.
