According to local media, two people were killed and 21 were injured when their bus flipped over on a road in western Saudi Arabia.

The bus was carrying 23 Arab nationals when it crashed in the Turubah governorate near Al Taif on Friday. According to a health statement, the accident injured 21 people, with seven critically injured, according to Saudi news portal Sabq.

The 14 others had suffered moderate to minor injuries. They were taken to several hospitals in the area. One patient was flown to a hospital in Taif by helicopter.

Other hospitals in the area were put on standby to handle any emergencies that arose as a result of the disaster.

According to the report, Taif health officials also dispatched seven ambulance teams to the crash site.

The cause of the accident was not immediately apparent.

To reduce road accidents, Saudi authorities have increased penalties for traffic violations in recent years.

A Saudi cleric, his wife, and their five children were killed in a road accident near the coastal city of Al Qunfudah in January.
