The International Gemini Observatory found the nearest black hole to Earth. A study claims the object is 1,560 light-years from Earth and 10 times larger than our sun. Gaia BH1. The study’s head called it the ‘first unambiguous observation of a sunlike star in a broad orbit’.

“While there have been many claimed detections of systems like this, almost all these discoveries have subsequently been refuted. This is the first unambiguous detection of a sunlike star in a wide orbit around a stellar-mass black hole in our galaxy,” says Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics’ Kareem El-Badry.

The Gemini North telescope in Hawaii found Gaia BHI. NSF’s NOIRLab operates the International Gemini Observatory’s twin telescopes. Only a few black holes, the universe’s most extreme objects, have been proven. Dormant Milky Way stellar mass Gaia BH1 was confirmed.

Our galaxy’s only stellar mass? Possibly. According to space.com, the galaxy has 100 million stellar-mass black holes and light-gobbling objects 100 times the sun. Gravitational-wave detectors have detected star masses that telescopes cannot.

Kareem El-Badry stated, “Take the Solar System, put a black hole where the Sun is, and the Sun where the Earth is, and you get this system.”

He added, “I’ve been searching for dormant black holes for the last four years using a wide range of datasets and methods. My previous attempts — as well as those of others — turned up a menagerie of binary systems that masquerade as black holes, but this is the first time the search has borne fruit.”

Binary-system stellar-mass black holes may feed. Dormant things are hard to find. That’s why the new study used a different method.

The team examined the star with ground instrumentation and Hawaii’s Gemini North and Keck 1 telescopes and Chile’s Magellan Clay and MPG/ESO telescopes.

The European Space Agency’s Gaia probe was used to investigate the system’s black hole potential.
El-Badry said Gemini follow-up studies proved that the pair comprises a normal star and at least one inactive black hole.
