“Troll” becomes the most popular non-English movie on Netflix
Norwegian monster movie ‘Troll‘ is released, which is currently the most well-liked non-English movie on the streaming service, Netflix has continued to enjoy success.
A new monster has appeared on the scene and is already attracting viewers because the kaiju genre is more well-liked than ever.
The movie has received an estimated 128 million viewing hours since its release on Netflix earlier this month, and more are still coming in.
Troll’s massive audience growth outpaces that of other well-liked non-English Netflix movies like Blood Red Sky, which saw 110 million hours of viewing, The Platform, which saw 108 million hours of viewing, and All Quiet on the Western Front, which saw 101 million hours of viewing.
Along with 93 other nations, including Norway, Japan, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, among many others, the movie is still among the top 10 on Netflix in the United States.
The film, which was based on Norwegian folklore, is about a group of humans who must cooperate to stop a giant Troll from wreaking havoc across the nation after emerging from a mountain.
Troll, directed by Roar Uthaug, stars Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Sjgrd Pettersen, and Anneke von der Lippe.
Roar Uthaug also directed Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vikander. The movie’s screenplay was written by Espen Horn, who also produces with Motion Blur’s Kristian Strand Sinkerud.
With a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Troll earned positive reception from critics, with praise directed at the film’s special effects and engaging action scenes, despite some criticism of its unoriginal story beats. The movie received a C+ grade from Marco Vito Oddo, who praised the movie’s titular creature but faulted the human characters.
“Troll is not getting any awards for originality. Still, it delivers what it promises by telling a story about a giant creature that destroys cities in its waking and the humans who try to prevent catastrophe,” He wrote about the movie in his review.
It is still unclear whether a sequel will materialize in the future despite the movie’s increasing popularity. There may be room for another monster franchise in the near future, though, given the renewed popularity of the genre brought on by Legendary’s Monsterverse.
Netflix is currently streaming Troll. See the movie’s official trailer and synopsis down below.
