Netflix tightens account sharing rules with new email requirement for profiles

New system allows each profile to be linked to an email address through the account settings

Netflix is introducing new changes to its account system that require a separate email address for each user profile, marking another step in its efforts to limit password sharing.

The streaming platform has long allowed users to create multiple profiles under one account, helping families and individuals keep viewing history and recommendations separate. However, many users have also used this feature to share a single subscription across different households.

Netflix began cracking down on password sharing in 2022 by requiring users on the same account to live in the same household. The company also started using tools such as IP addresses, device IDs and account activity to identify unauthorized sharing.

Earlier, users outside a household were allowed access through an extra paid option. The company now appears to be adding another layer of control by linking each profile to a unique email address.

In early June 2026, some users began seeing on screen alerts asking them to add an email address to their profile. Reports from Reddit users suggest the rollout is currently affecting multiple profile accounts within the same household.

The new system allows each profile to be linked to an email address through the account settings. Once added, users can sign in and switch between profiles normally. However, Netflix has excluded kids’ profiles from this requirement, and those accounts will not need an email address.

Some users have also discussed possible workarounds using email variations, although Netflix has not confirmed any exceptions or bypass methods.
