ISLAMABAD: Prices of various food items witnessed a declining trend during the week ended July 29, 202, compared with the previous week, according to the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday.

Prices of chicken slid 18.35 per cent, whereas the price of bananas declined 1.32 per cent on a week-on-week basis.

Likewise, the price of pulses, including moong, mash and gram went down 1.32 per cent, 0.58 per cent and 0.06 per cent, respectively, whereas the prices of potatoes declined 1.23 per cent during the week.

Meanwhile, on a year-on-year basis, the price of food items that witnessed a decline included tomatoes, 21.83 per cent; potatoes, 20.45 per cent; moong pulse, 19.73 per cent; and chicken prices declined 8.04 per cent.

The price of six items witnessed 11.8 per cent decrease during the week under review, while 22 items prices remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, the items that witnessed increase in their prices on a week-on-week basis included tomatoes, 6.64 per cent; eggs, 3.52 per cent; vegetable ghee (2.5kg), 2.52 per cent; vegetable ghee (1kg), 1.81 per cent; sugar, 1.49 per cent; and cooking oil, 1.23 per cent.

On a year-on-year basis, the food items that witnessed a surge in prices included chilies powder, 37.29 per cent; mustard oil, 36.17 per cent; vegetable ghee (1kg), 32.84 per cent; vegetable ghee (2.5kg), 31.46 per cent; and cooking oil, 31 per cent.

The non-food items that witnessed an increase included the electricity tariff (for first quarter), 60.81 per cent; LPG, 53.50 per cent; men sandal, 33.37 per cent; and men chappal, 25.13 per cent.

The overall SPI-based weekly inflation for the week ended July 29, 2021 increased 0.03 per cent, compared with the previous week.

Moreover, the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) is computed on a weekly basis to assess the price movements of essential commodities at a shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.

The SPI consists of 51 essential items and prices are being collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country. During the week under review, the prices of 23 items surged (45.10 per cent), according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data.
