Move over, Ghost of Kyiv, a new folk hero of Ukrainian defence has emerged.

This week, reports surfaced of a female Ukrainian sniper identified only by her codename “Charcoal,” as well as images of her with her face hidden by a shemagh-style scarf and her weapon draped in camouflage netting.

The photographs of the sharpshooter were shared on Facebook by the Ukrainian armed forces, who branded her a “modern-day hero.”

According to the article, the sharpshooter joined the Ukrainian marines in 2017 in order to impress her younger brother, who was also in the Ukrainian armed forces.

She saw combat against Kremlin-backed rebels in the eastern Donbas area before her contract expired early this year. When Russian soldiers entered in February, she re-enlisted.

The Ukrainian armed forces did not provide any information regarding her combat successes against the invasion.

“These aren’t real people. “The Nazis weren’t as heinous as these orcs,” the sharpshooter allegedly stated of the Russians. “We will undoubtedly win. Personally, I will fight to the bitter end!”

Similar to rumours of a secret fighter ace piling up Russian kills in the early days of the war, “Charcoal” immediately became a favourite of pro-Ukrainian social media. The so-called Ghost of Kyiv’s high-flying exploits were difficult to verify and were most likely fictitious.

But, if real, Charcoal will be joining a long line of female Ukrainian sharpshooters.

During WWII, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, a Ukrainian sniper in the Soviet Red Army, is said to have killed over 300 Nazi soldiers. She was dubbed “Lady Death” and was honoured a Hero of the Soviet Union, the USSR’s highest accolade.
