Donald Trump has urged Joe Biden to be “calm, cool, and dry” throughout the present situation around the Nord Stream pipelines. The outgoing US President advised his successor to be “smart” and strike a deal and offered to lead the negotiations.
The leak in the natural gas pipelines was detected this week and was believed to have begun three days prior to his intervention.
Both Nord Stream 1 and 2, which run down the bottom of the Baltic Sea, are reportedly affected.
EU and Russian officials suspect sabotage of the underwater pipes that delivered Russian natural gas to Germany.
EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell stated, ““Any deliberate disruption of European energy infrastructure is utterly unacceptable and will be met with a robust and united response.”
Since the leak was found, subtle fingers have been pointed in many directions.
A British defense official said that it was certainly premeditated and involved remotely detonable underwater bombs.
They stated that such devices may have been dropped using a boat or underwater drone months or years ago.
According to reports, it may have been Russian actors, but a military submarine would have been identified.
Kremlin officials reportedly blamed the US for the gas leak after Vice President Biden threatened to cancel Nord Stream if Russia invaded Ukraine.
Maria Zakharova, a spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry, stated that the US President was “obligated” to answer whether Washington was at fault.
Tuesday, Biden administration officials spoke with their Danish colleagues about the “possible sabotage” of the pipeline.
Morten Bodskov, Denmark’s defense minister, met with NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg today and expressed worry about regional security.
Norway is increasing its military presence at oil and gas plants, while Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin stated the nation will observe its waterways attentively.
Earlier today, the former president wrote on Truth Social – Mr. Trump’s own version of Twitter he created after being banned from the latter social media site – that Mr. Biden “should remain ‘cool, calm, and dry’ on the SABOTAGE of the Nord Stream pipelines.”
He said: “This is a big event that should not entail a big solution, at least not yet.”
He urged Mr. Biden to “not make matters worse” and instead to “be strategic, be smart (brilliant!) [and] get a negotiated deal done RIGHT NOW. Both sides need and want it.”
Mr. Trump warned that the conflict “could lead to a major escalation, or war” and that the “catastrophe” between Russia and Ukraine “would definitely not have happened if I were President.”
One pipeline exclusively sent natural gas to Europe; Nord Stream 2 was constructed and ready to go online before the invasion. The project was shelved by both Germany and the EU as part of a series of measures.
The EU later said it will divest itself of all Russian fossil fuel imports in the next months and years.
After saying the first Nord Stream pipeline’s supply will be switched off for a few days from August into September, Gazprom stated it wasn’t ready to bring it back online and gave no indication when it would.
EU officials accuse Russia of using it as an excuse to cut off Europe’s gas supply as winter approaches, leaving policymakers scurrying to shore up energy supplies.
Putin may be hurting Russia more than Europe: a Yale analysis concluded that Russia’s economy was collapsing from a lack of lucrative exports into Europe and was struggling to sell fossil fuels in Asia for the same price. Neither does it have the same infrastructure in Asia as it did in Europe, according to the report.
