Russia at UN says US gains from Nord Stream disruption
The Russian ambassador to the United Nations told the Security Council On Friday, that the U.S. has a lot to gain from the damage to the Nord Stream pipeline system under the Baltic Sea. However, he stopped short of blaming the U.S. for the explosions this week.
At Russia’s request, a council meeting was held to talk about the leaks found on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines on Tuesday. Russian-controlled Gazprom and its European partners spent billions of dollars on these pipelines.
Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said that the main question about the blasts was whether or not the US could benefit from the destruction of the pipelines. “There is no doubt about it.”
Nebenzia said that American companies that sell liquefied natural gas to Europe should be happy about how much more LNG is being sent to Europe.
Friday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the U.S. and its allies blew up the Nord Stream pipeline. “The Anglo-Saxons didn’t think the punishments were enough, so they turned to sabotage,” he said. Since Putin sent his troops into Ukraine in late February, the US and other countries have put Russia on several rounds of sanctions.
The White House said that the claim that it was to blame was false.
Richard Mills, the U.S. deputy representative to the UN, said at the meeting, “Let me be clear: the United States categorically denies any involvement in this incident, and we reject any claim to the contrary.”
Mills also said that the US has sent more LNG to Europe in recent years because Russia has not been a reliable source of energy for Europe for a long time. In the past, when Russia and Eastern Europe disagreed about gas prices, Russia cut off gas to Eastern Europe in the winter.
