Kate Middleton Roots on England at Rugby League World Cup

England’s men face Papua New Guinea in the Rugby League World Cup quarterfinals, and Kate Middleton hopes to be their fortunate charm.

On Saturday, the Princess of Wales attended the match in Wigan, England, wearing a long red coat, a turtleneck sweater, and burgundy boots.

She also wore a red poppy pin on Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 in the UK, honoring military personnel who died in war.

Kate, 40, met with RLWC2021 Social Impact Program partners before the game. Since June 2018, the initiative has focused on the tournament’s host cities to boost rugby access and mental health.

Kate met England and Papua New Guinea on the field. She participated in the November Mental Fitness Match Day’s minute of silence. The stadium united to fight silence’s negative effects on men’s mental health.

After their match against Canada, Kate greeted England Women’s Rugby League players at halftime. The Rugby League World Cup 2022 will be the first to have men’s, women’s, and wheelchair events simultaneously.

Kate became Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League royal patron this year. After Prince Harry, Queen Elizabeth patronized her. After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stood down as senior working royals and left several U.K. charities and organizations, it was the first of Prince Harry’s patronages to be reallocated to another royal.

Kate made her rugby debut at Twickenham Stadium in February, meeting players, coaches, and officials from the men’s and women’s teams as they prepared for the Six Nations Championships. She even engaged in a line-out play, when teammates lift a player to collect a ball after it leaves the field.
Kate laughed as she was hoisted, catching the ball and passed it to a player below, earning shouts and clapping.

Since Prince William is patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, Kate’s new role—previously held by her brother-in-law Prince Harry, 38—created a husband-and-wife sporting rivalry.

The couple and Prince George, 9, attended the February England vs. Wales Six Nations game at Twickenham Stadium, despite backing rival sides. England triumphed 23-19, giving Kate bragging rights.
