Kate Winslet pays mother’s $17,000 electricity bill
Kate Winslet contributed £17,000 to a woman whose daughter’s life support expense was sky-high.
Carolynne Hunter’s bill could be high next year, said Clackmannanshire Council.
Her 12-year-old daughter Freya has severe cerebral palsy and needs oxygen.
Ms. Hunter was overwhelmed when the Titanic actress intervened when BBC Scotland revealed their struggle.
Winslet donated £17,000 to the family’s GoFundMe and wished them luck.
Ms. Hunter, 49, said, “Our family path has been horrific, and I’m done.”
“When I heard about the money, I fell into tears. Is this real? ”
Freya’s equipment fits in the Hunters’ big, inefficient Tillicoultry council house.
To conserve money, Ms. Hunter has turned off the heating in most rooms.
She works full-time in the third sector on a decent wage, but she doesn’t get as much help as low-income workers.
Ms. Hunter worries that winter power disruptions due to Russia’s war on Ukraine could endanger Freya’s care.
Freya’s cerebral palsy causes breathing difficulty, especially at night.
The family needs two NHS nurses or self-directed support (SDS) professionals.
Freya’s heart rate, oxygen levels, and airways are frequently suctioned.
Freya’s room was the only one heated to keep her and her crew comfortable, but Ms. Hunter explained they had to cut back.
“I’m nipping at the staff not to turn on the warmth until it’s required,” said Ms. Hunter.
“The council installed solar panels to prevent blackouts, but it won’t cut the price.”
Before Winslet’s donation, Ms. Hunter’s primary fear was fuel poverty in the UK.
Despite the money, the cost of living crisis remains a concern.
Cornwall Insight predicted last month that the energy price cap may climb by 73% for ordinary users, although wholesale prices could influence the prediction.
Media coverage of the government’s tax and spending alternatives before the Autumn Statement has focused on a “black hole” in the public budget.
Ms. Hunter wants the Scottish and UK governments to help struggling caregiving families.
“I didn’t speak out to gain contributions, but I have to make sure Freya is OK.
What about everyone else? I wanted the government to pay for it, not a celebrity.
