UK defense ministry sends helicopters to Ukraine for first time
The United Kingdom is sending its initial shipment of helicopters and additional artillery to Ukraine, according to an announcement made by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense on Wednesday.
According to the statement released by the ministry, 1,000 Sea King helicopters will be shipped for the very first time “to provide critical search and rescue capabilities,” and 10,000 artillery shells will also be sent.
According to the statement, the support was declared by Ben Wallace, the defense secretary of the United Kingdom, while he was on a visit to Norway.
While there, he will hold a meeting of the Northern Group of military ministers.
According to the defense ministry, the United Kingdom has provided 10 Ukrainian military crews with training on the Sea King helicopters that lasted for a total of six weeks in the United Kingdom.
“Our support for Ukraine is unwavering. These additional artillery rounds will help Ukraine to secure the land it has reclaimed from Russia in recent weeks,” Wallace said.
The announcement was made when UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made his maiden visit to Kyiv over the weekend.
While there, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and announced a $60 billion air defense package for the country. The news came as a result of this meeting.
