King Charles III’s coronation draws near.

The crown he will wear has been removed from the Tower of London, where it is kept with other Crown Jewels, so it may be repaired until May 6, 2023.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Saturday that the St. Edward Crown will be “updated” before the Coronation in five months.

74-year-old Charles will be crowned at Westminster Abbey. In 1661, Charles II received the first crown. It replaced the 1649-melted crown.

The palace said that the original was thought to have been made by Edward the Confessor, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England in the 11th century.

In 1661, the Royal Goldsmith made a new crown. It had four crosses-pattée, four fleurs-de-lis, and two arches, like the former one. Solid gold with rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnets, topazes, and tourmalines. The velvet cap has an ermine band.

King Charles may depart the event wearing the lighter Imperial State Crown.

Charles wears this Imperial State Crown during events like the State Opening of Parliament, just like his mother, Queen Elizabeth. Only coronations use the St. Edward Crown. The 96-year-old Queen was the last to wear it.

This service will certainly have fewer attendees than Elizabeth’s 70 years ago.

Instead of 8,000 individuals, there will be 2,000 in 1953. Palace workers believe Charles’ celebration will have the grandeur and traditions of a state function.
