David Fisher, the actress’s son-in-law, Justin Fisher, and other close friends, including novelist Amy Tan and her husband, joined Gordon, 56, at Moreno’s house.

Gordon tells, “It was a white party with lovely white décor and white fairy lights to suit her sparkling white condo.”

Since Moreno “thought she was coming upstairs merely to examine a new light fixture, she didn’t know the place would be packed with people,” Moreno “was absolutely surprised” by the gathering.

Gordon continues, “She was happy that I made it happen. She had expressed to me previously how much she desired she could celebrate her birthday in her new home but she just didn’t see how to make it happen.

More information on the celebration is provided by Gordon to PEOPLE, who also learns that the guests enjoyed “a supper of paella produced by a local caterer” before witnessing some outstanding performance.

According to her memory, “a weird man arrived to the door in a black suit and hat and burst into the living space to start serenading [Moreno] with vintage Frank Sinatra numbers [into] a microphone at the top of his lungs.” The majority of us were laughing and appreciating his absurd versions while they were going on.

Gordon describes her mother’s big night: “At the end of his act he stated he was sent by Norman Lear and Brent Miller and contacted Brent on FaceTime, who wished her a happy birthday because he couldn’t be there.”

But the singer’s recognition of the birthday girl was a memorable moment. According to her daughter, “The singer didn’t know who she was, which was the funniest part. He was just given Rita’s name.”

He almost passed out when she said, “Well, I’m Rita Moreno,” Gordon recalls. “After he finished singing, he glanced around and noticed all of the old images I had put up of her as part of the décor and he remarked, Oh, I see you have Rita Moreno here on your table.” “He knelt down and began singing West Side Story tunes. He was knocked over, and we were all in fits of laughter. She was deeply moved.”

The social media tributes to Moreno in honour of her special day, which she uploaded to her Instagram Story, came from people like Ariana DeBose, who won an Oscar for playing Anita in the 1961 movie in which Moreno originated the role, Viola Davis, and others.

Tan posted an Instagram picture of herself and Moreno at the event along with a lengthy caption in which she paid respect to the legendary actor.

Tan said, “This is 91.” “Rita Moreno is such a blessing to have in my life. We have been friends for 21 years. She is a force for good, great even; a good laugh; a bulls—- detector; a survivor of Hollywood prejudice; a kind friend who shares ideas, stories, and food; and a wide-eyed girl in go-go boots who never dreamed she would one day win an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and Golden Globe.”

“To “Rita Gordon,” one of her friends sent a singing birthday telegram. At one point, the singer claimed that Rita resembled Rita Moreno and that she appeared to be 61 rather than 91 “Added Tan. Rita Moreno, happy birthday.
