Sunday, the heads of three energy companies in France urged the French populace to immediately limit use of fuel, oil, electricity, and gas in the face of shortages and skyrocketing costs caused by Russia’s supply cuts and the conflict in Ukraine.

“The effort must be immediate, collective and massive,” the leaders of the three companies, TotalEnergies, EDF, and Engie said in a rare joint statement that was published in the French weekly Journal du Dimanche. “Every gesture counts,” the statement said.

In retaliation for the 27-member bloc’s sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has reduced and in some cases halted gas deliveries to some European Union countries.

The European energy system has been under significant strain for months, and the French energy system is hardly an exception. Gas stocks across the continent are in a state of high alert, and rationing procedures have been implemented. France, like other European nations, is attempting to increase its winter gas reserves, with the goal of filling its storage by early autumn in order to avoid an economic and political disaster.

“Taking action in the summer will prepare us for winter,” the energy companies’ leaders said.

In addition to the gas supply difficulties caused by the conflict in Ukraine, there are strains on Europe’s energy generation capacities and drought-related decreases in hydroelectric production.

“The soaring energy prices are a result of these difficulties that threaten our social and political cohesion and have a heavy impact on purchasing power of families,” the statement said.
