Camila Cabello is striving to provide a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth and their families in reaction to Florida’s contentious “Don’t Say Gay” law. Cabello plans to conduct a charity concert in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 8, when she will talk about the launch of her new “Protect Our Kids” fund, which will provide needed funding to teachers, children, and families affected by the new legislation, according to Variety.

“As someone who grew up and still lives in Florida, I am appalled that my home state is putting the health and lives of young Floridians at risk by passing this law and inviting discrimination into our schools,” Cabello said. “I am so grateful to all of our founding partners who are standing in solidarity with LGBTQ youth and families and raising money for the Protect All Kids Fund to help Lambda Legal and Equality Florida stop this hateful law.”

Valentina from “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” a local choir, and singer-songwriter Shea Diamond are among the special acts expected to be at the West Hollywood event. Cabello’s emergency fund was established with the help of Equality Florida and Lambda Legal, and they’re also establishing hotlines — 833-I-SAY-GAY, 833-SAY-TGNC, and 833-LGBTQLAW — that will provide further resources and support to anyone harmed by the “Don’t Say Gay” legislation at any time.

Governor DeSantis signed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in March in an effort to keep sexual orientation topics out of the school. This encompasses any gender and gender identity-related classroom training from kindergarten to third grade. The law’s ambiguity, as many critics have pointed out, makes it simple to erase, invalidate, and demonise the LGBTQ+ community as something “different” from which children must be safeguarded.

“This law emboldens a small, angry cadre of anti-LGBTQ adults to intimidate school districts,” Equality Florida executive director Nadine Smith told Variety. Cabello’s foundation strives to show children that they are not alone and that others welcome and support them for who they are.
