May 30, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ will premiere on HBO Max

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, from Warner Bros. Pictures, will premiere on the streaming site on May 30.

The third volume in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter spinoff franchise reveals Dumbledore’s previously unknown biography for the first time. In the film, Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen, who replaces Johnny Depp as the dark wizard) wreaks havoc on the wizarding world in his bid to grab power, but the only person who can stop him is his erstwhile friend Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law).

Dumbledore teams up with magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead a group of wizards, witches, and a muggle (Dan Fogler) against Grindelwald’s army. However, they are unaware that Dumbledore is unable to confront Grindelwald directly because of a secret blood agreement the two struck years ago not to fight one other.

Meanwhile, danger looms for Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), whose true identity was revealed by Grindelwald to be Aurelius Dumbledore in the franchise’s second chapter.

Secrets of Dumbledore was written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves, based on a screenplay by Rowling. Neil Blair, Danny Cohen, Josh Berger, Courtenay Valenti, and Michael Sharp executive produce alongside David Heyman, Kloves, Lionel Wigram, Tim Lewis, and Rowling.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them released in cinemas worldwide on April 15, grossing $43 million in the United States and $193 million worldwide. Following The Batman’s launch in April, this is Warner Bros.’ latest major release to stream on HBO Max. Warner Bros. theatrical releases are intended to be accessible on streaming services 45 days after they debut in cinemas.

After kicking off 2022 with the retrospective special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, which reunited stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and more franchise alums to commemorate the film’s 20th anniversary, Secrets of Dumbledore marks HBO Max’s latest visit to the Wizarding World.

The entire Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts film series is also available on HBO Max, as well as the Helen Mirren-hosted Harry Potter: Tournament of Houses and a Fanstic Beasts: A Natural History special, in which host Stephen Fry tells the stories behind the world’s most fantastic beasts that inspired storytelling.
