In an Instagram video, the Sorry singer said that he has Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which impacted nerves in his ear and face. His right eye was not blinking, he noticed.

According to Charles Nduka, a consultant plastic reconstructive surgeon in the United Kingdom and co-founder of the health charity Facial Palsy UK, around 75% of individuals with the condition who undergo early treatment, including steroids and antivirals, recover completely.

“I did observe in Mr Bieber’s video that he does appear to have some indications of recovery, which is positive,” Nduka told Reuters.

“One of the most evident characteristics about facial paralysis is that patients are unable to close their eyes fully to blink and they are unable to smile,” Nduka noted.

“Before the grin returns, the first sign will be an increase in symmetry in the face at rest. As a result, the base of the nose often slightly lifts, and the mouth becomes more even. I could detect some evidence of early healing in the video that was published.”

Nduka said he deals with patients in the entertainment sector and that it is critical that they address any immune system abnormalities before returning to work.

“They will be under financial and other demands to go back out there as quickly as possible,” he continued, “but doing so will only lead to longer-term difficulties.”
