  • Tarana J. Burke recently spoke out on a jury verdict on Wednesday that decided in favour of Johnny Depp over Amber Heard in a $50 million defamation dispute.
  • Following Depp’s triumph, several social media pundits said that the judgement was the final nail in the coffin for the #MeToo movement,
  • It allegedly emboldened women in Hollywood to accuse well-known figures such as Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby of sexual assault.

In response to these statements, campaigner Burke made a post on social media on Thursday, saying, “the ‘MeToo’ movement isn’t dead, this system is dead.”

“This is the same judicial system that y’all have been relying on for justice and accountability for decades to no effect,” she said on Instagram.

According to reports, jurors unanimously ruled that Heard had defamed her ex-husband by publishing an editorial in 2018 that claimed he had been “abused by Pirates of the Caribbean actor throughout their turbulent relationship.”

Burke stated in the aftermath of Depp-verdict, Heard’s “When you get the result you want, ‘the movement works,’ when you don’t, it’s dead.”

In addition, the movement’s CEO stated, “When Weinstein went to jail, it was ‘MeToo is winning!'” “What a blow, MeToo is losing!” said Cosby when he returned home.
