When King refused for World War II & Queen Elizabeth stepped in
Queen Elizabeth II is renowned for a variety of valiant actions, including being the first woman in the royal family to serve in the army.
In the Battle of Britain, the German soldiers bombarded Britain nonstop, according to TIME magazine. To aid in the war effort, many Britons offered their services.
Queen, who was 18 at the time, wanted to serve in the military. Her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, rejected her request by stating that ‘no female member of the royal family to serve in the military.’
Lilibet’s parents finally gave in after more than a year of persistent pleading, and the princess enlisted in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in February 1945 as a “mechanic.”
As the media further added, “In a six-week training course, she passed a military driving test, learned to read maps, and worked repairing engines. The Associated Press at the time named her ‘Princess Auto Mechanic.”
