A new video reveals that Prince William and Harry’s father, King Charles III, could have perished during the live broadcast of the raising of the Mary Rose.
The Mary Rose, King Henry VIII’s flagship for 34 years, sank in 1545 after a fight with the French navy. In October 1982, the wreckage discovered in the depths of the Solent in 1971 was excavated.
Charles, the eldest son of the late Queen and the new King of Britain, was present to observe the monumental endeavor. A new documentary claims that he narrowly avoided what could have been a tragic catastrophe there.
During the operation, a portion of the massive Tog Mor crane – which translates to “great lift” in Gaelic – and the barge fell near Charles. He was preparing to investigate the craft up close when it crashed, nearly shattering the Mary Rose’s hull as her frame disintegrated near where the then-Prince of Wales had been standing.
Jack Frost, a Royal Engineer who participated in the operation and watched Charles’ near shave, described how silence descended after the frame detached.
According to the documentary, Charles persuaded the multimillionaire owner of Howard Doris, an offshore construction engineering company, to lend the renowned floating crane, which at the time cost approximately £25,000 to rent but now costs nearly £80,000.
