Mayor Eric Adams performs to Chaka Khan at Angel Ball
Mayor Eric Adams danced the night away to Chaka Khan after giving a speech at Denise Rich’s annual Gabrielle’s Angel Ball in New York on Monday night that made him sound more like he was prepared to run for Commander in Chief than battle crime in the city.
He began his address by highlighting the significance of the Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for cancer research before telling the audience at Cipriani Wall Street that there was only the “American dream,” adding, “Dammit, there is an American dream!”
That ideal “comes alive,” he continued, “when we tell ourselves through the darkest times that we’re going to delve deep and find sense and logic to those things, and [the] degree of uncertainties that hovers over us every day.”
“It absolutely broke my heart when I read a poll the other day that… indicated 52-percent of Americans will not defend this country if it is attacked by foreign foes,” he later said to the gathering. You know what, though? I declare my patriotism to the American flag every day as I begin my day, making me one of the “48 percenters.”
He continued with the entire Pledge of Allegiance after that. Adams continued, “Your revenues and donations will go to save the lives of people, and let’s be clear: It’s a blessing to live rich, but it’s a sin to die rich, so send another check. We’re able to [hold galas to battle cancer] because of that dream.”
The mayor went to a birthday party early for Hillary Clinton, who turns 75 on Wednesday, at the St. Regis with his companion Tracey Collins, according to sources, before going to the gala alone.
Without Collins, Adams arrived to the ball with a security detail. Adams “was very easy to work with and was like, “Whatever you need me to do, I’ll do it,” according to an event insider,”
The mayor’s address impressed the audience, defying organizers’ expectations that he would be “in and out.” Despite this, the mayor stayed.
When not surrounded by guests who pushed through the crowd to grab a picture, Adams sat out with friends Star Jones, Camilla Olson, and Harvey Spevak. Stars including Khan, Fat Joe, and director Lee Daniels also took pictures with him.
Adams remained until the very end, dancing to the tunes of DJ Cassidy, Khan, and Joe. Khan was heard exclaiming, “How is Fat Joe going to beat that!” when he finished singing.
During the event, $2.8 million was raised for cancer research.
I’ve never met [Adams] and I know all the mayors, but one unaffected socialite, Nikki Haskell, who counts late Mayor David Dinkins as a former neighbor, told me at the event of Adams: He knows everyone’s name there, based on my encounter with him at Zero Bond. By telling us, “By the way, Lee Daniels loves my TikToks, and Denise just bought some of NFTs,” she also included a promotion for her most recent endeavors.
