Ryan Murphy is currently the king of Netflix. With Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and now The Watcher sitting securely at the top of the streaming service’s charts, he has succeeded in appealing to a large audience with his true-crime-themed works.
Now, Murphy intends to return the spotlight to the female cast members of his current smash series.
Murphy sits down with the women of The Watcher in a new video on Netflix’s YouTube page to explore their roles on the programme, as well as their history as performers and how they came to be a part of his vision.
The video is a thirty-minute-plus deep dive into the involvement of the actresses in the series.
Jennifer Coolidge, Mia Farrow, Noma Dumezwini, and Margo Martindale co-star alongside Naomi Watts as the series opens with Ryan Murphy rejoicing over the fact that the series was able to find a slew of leading roles for women over the age of 50 and how he was able to recruit such a mix of iconic actresses.
Watts then discusses with Murphy her return to the thriller genre and how the true story of The Watcher immediately attracted her to the role.
Murphy then discusses with Farrow how her performance in Rosemary’s Baby paved the door for female horror heroes.
This series also brings the two together after Murphy had wanted her on his other blockbuster series American Horror Story, a chance she claimed she regrets not taking.
The series marks a reunion for Coolidge with Murphy, with whom she previously collaborated on Nip/Tuck, however this time she got to play a villain.
The two have a long-standing friendship, and she discusses how she wanted to be a part of American Horror Story because her home was used and how she wanted to embrace the evil in her latest role under Murphy.
The following interviews are with Martindale and Dumezweni, with Martindale addressing her character, the mysterious Big Mo, and Dumezweni discussing how she fit perfectly into the part Murphy had envisioned for her.
It’s a grand gesture of gratitude to the women who contributed to The Watcher’s uniqueness and an opportunity to understand their thoughts as they stepped into the eerie true story.
Watts and Bobby Cannavale play a couple whose move into their dream home in Westfield, New Jersey becomes a nightmare in The Watcher.
As soon as they settle there, a stalker using the pen name The Watcher began sending them weird and downright frightening letters.
The series is based on the true story of the Broaddus family, who ultimately abandoned their house because they were unable to identify or stop their stalker.
It was created by Murphy and his regular partner Ian Brennan.
Since its premiere on October 13, Murphy and Brennan have been on cloud nine, as the series has topped the English television ratings with 125,01 million hours viewed.
It’s Murphy’s second #1 debut in the previous four weeks, following Dahmer’s triumph, and it’s also an international smash, reaching the Top 10 in 90 countries and the top place in 20 of them.
The Watcher is currently available on Netflix. Below are Murphy’s in-depth conversations with the women of the series.
