Answer to Steven Spielberg’s parents’ wish is “The Fabelmans”

‘The Fabelmans’, Steven Spielberg’s intensely personal love letter to filmmaking and a semi-autobiographical look at his childhood growing up in a post-World War II American, will hit theatres in just over a week.

The movie follows young filmmaker Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) as he deals with issues related to his artistic endeavours.

His family is at the heart of this battle. Sammy is caught in the ideological gap between his father Burt (Paul Dano), who is more conservative and scientific, and his mother Mitzi (Michelle Williams), who is incredibly supportive of his aspirations.

However, Spielberg’s real-life parents did acknowledge that they had always wanted him to make a movie about them.

Spielberg discussed the movie and its significance to him and his family in-depth during a sit-down interview with THR.

Even though The Fabelmans was extremely personal, he underlined how delighted his late parents, Arnold Spielberg and Leah Adler, were to see their history on screen before they passed away. In the interview, he stated:

“They were actually nagging me, ‘When are you going to tell that story about our family, Steve?’ And so this was something they were very enthusiastic about.”

Despite some artistic license taken in The Fabelmans’ portrayal of the director’s life, his parents were kept remarkably true to fact.

Adler fostered many of the same values in her son because she was the family’s artistic inspiration.

She, like him, pursued her own interests as a pianist and artist, but Spielberg also wanted to highlight the aspect of her that she loved and valued as she grew up.

Spielberg wanted to highlight his father’s methodical temperament as a skilled engineer, particularly in contrast to his mother’s vivacious personality.

Despite their differences, he was still described as very sweet and his influence was just as important to the director growing up.

Spielberg reteamed with his longtime producer Kristie Macosko Krieger and recent partner Tony Kushner to bring his passion project The Fabelmans to life, making it a wholly family affair.

Sadly, Spielberg’s parents will not watch the movie. His mother passed away in 2017 and his father in 2020, two events that primarily motivated Spielberg to work more closely with Kushner on the movie.

In addition to being a picture that is significant to the director personally, it is anticipated to be a successful awards contender.

Early reviews hail his work as another classic, and the movie made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In his review, Collider’s Ross Bonaime gave the movie a perfect score and praised it for shedding light on Spielberg’s personal life and the influences that shaped his sense of style.

Along with LaBelle, Williams, and Dano, the movie also stars Judd Hirsch as Uncle Boris and Seth Rogen as Bennie Loewy, Sammy’s honorary uncle who is modelled after Steven Spielberg’s favorite uncle.

The ensemble cast is completed by Jeannie Berlin, Julia Butters, Robin Bartlett, and Keeley Karsten. Josh McLaglen and Carla Raij were also involved in the executive producing.

On November 11, The Fabelmans will be released in theatres.
