‘Bruce Almighty’ Writers Wanted to Make Sequel with Jim Carrey
Bruce Almighty almost got a sequel that never happened starring Jim Carrey.
Steve Koren and Mark O’Keefe, who wrote the 2003 comedy, pitched a sequel in 2010 that “many people adored.” Koren says it “simply didn’t work out.”
Bruce (Carrey) questions God after not securing an anchor job, so God (Morgan Freeman) gives him his powers to test whether he can handle them better. Jennifer Aniston played Grace, and Steve Carell, Lisa Ann Walter, and Philip Baker Hall also starred.
(Director Tom Shadyac returned for Carell’s Evan Almighty, a 2007 flop)
In Brucifer, Bruce’s wife Grace would have died, leading him to ally with Satan to bring her back. O’Keefe suggested Freeman or Carrey for Lucifer.
Koren: “He lost faith because the world seemed unfair. It was serious, but we’d write it lightly. No one wanted to be sad. I think that terrified [the studio], but Jim recognized we were doing a big comedy and thought everyone would relate with it.”
“I recall [Carrey] chuckling when we pitched her as Jennifer Aniston. He answered, ‘No, we’ll make her lovely again once she looks like a zombie.’ That was great, “Koren:
O’Keefe: “It was Job’s trials. God’s world didn’t go his way. After getting married, everything fell apart. He questioned everything and found a new solution.” Peacock streams Bruce Almighty.
