Windsor Castle is prepared for Christmas, so deck the halls!

The stunning Christmas decorations in the state rooms of Windsor Castle were unveiled by the Royal Collection Trust on Thursday, one month to the day before Christmas Eve. The ancestral house of the British royal family is open to visitors, and it has been decorated for the first holiday season under King Charles III.

When visitors arrive, they will notice the festive atmosphere thanks to the foliage and wreaths that have been hung on the grounds’ gates and lampposts. Unmissable before entering St. George’s Hall is the garland-draped Grand Staircase of the state apartments. There is a 20-foot Nordmann Fir tree, which is the joyous centrepiece of the Christmas show. It was responsibly grown close in Windsor Great Park and is sparkling with hundreds of decorations.

During a photo call for Christmas decorations at Windsor Castle, Berkshire, on November 24, 2022, staff members of the Royal Collection Trust decorate a Christmas tree in the Crimson Drawing Room.

A single tree simply wouldn’t do for the vast castle, so the Crimson Drawing Room, which guests can see alongside the Semi-State Rooms, boasts a second evergreen. Additionally decked out for Christmas is the magnificent Waterloo Chamber, which features a lavish tabletop display of treasures from the Royal Collection.

The holiday decorations at Windsor Castle will be up until January 2, 2023, but for three days in December, they will be even more festive. In St. George’s Hall, where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry held their royal wedding reception and revealed their son Archie, now 3 years old, to the world, carolers will sing at the tree on Dec. 8, 9, and 12.

After the Christmas decorations are unveiled on December 1 at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland, the British monarch’s official residence, the public is also being invited to share in the holiday cheer. The state apartments’ Great Stair will shine with a sparkling garland, just like at Windsor, and the Throne Room and Great Gallery will display two enormous Christmas trees. The table is set with a silver service given to King George V and Queen Mary for their Silver Jubilee in 1935, surrounded by ivy and candelabra, in the Royal Dining Room, where time has turned back.

As the first holidays without Queen Elizabeth, who passed away in September, the upcoming ones will feel different for the royal family. King Charles’ Christmas plans have not yet been made public by the palace, but the royal family usually spends the holiday at Sandringham, the late Queen’s cherished Norfolk country estate.
