Hannah Waddingham has signed on to star in the Universal action thriller The Fall Guy. The Drew Pearce-penned movie centres on a stuntman who is beyond his prime and gets hired again to work with his previous partner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, only for the star to vanish. The plot is loosely based on the 1980s TV series Lee Majors, but with a twist. Ryan Gosling plays the stuntman.

The stunt-filled movie, whose producer is the Ted Lasso actor, runs into difficulty when its hero goes missing. She joins Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke in the movie, which is presently in the filming stages in Australia under the direction of David Leitch.

In the movie, Blunt will play a prosthetic makeup artist who had a love relationship with Ryan Gosling’s stuntman in the past. Hsu portrays the role of the absent movie star’s personal assistant, while Duke plays the stuntman’s patient closest friend. Leitch joined the project after directing Bullet Train for Sony Pictures, a $239.3 million box office hit. He also co-directed the first John Wick with Chad Stahelski, among his other previous movies being Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Atomic Blonde. Pearce wrote the scripts for Iron Man 3, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Hobbs & Shaw, and Hobbs & Shaw. In 2018, he also directed his first film, Hotel Artemis.

Since joining Ted Lasso, Waddingham has had a couple breakthrough years. She was honoured with two Emmy nominations (and one win) as well as wins for the Critics’ Choice Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the best ensemble for her role of AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton in the Apple TV+ programme, which also starred Jason Sudeikis.

Waddingham has recently appeared in Sex Education on Netflix, which will shortly return for a fourth season, and she has also joined the voice cast of the brand-new animated Garfield movie, which stars an all-star ensemble. Additionally, she had a stunning appearance in Hocus Pocus 2 for Disney+, playing Mother Witch, the sorceress who bestowed the fabled Sanderson sisters with their magical prowess.

Universal will have high expectations for the movie, which they anticipate will be a strong performer on their spring schedule in 2024. The film has a fantastic cast on board and a director/writer team who have proven themselves more than capable of bringing crowd-pleasing action on a blockbuster scale.
