According to NYPD reports, Charmaine Croffman, 42, allegedly fled after killing 27-year-old Victoria Goode with a knife. According to numerous news sources, the dispute between the two about the volume of the music playing in their room apparently led to the incident. Goode was discovered with several stab wounds at around 10 p.m. in a hallway on the sixth floor of the Project Renewal New Providence Women’s Shelter on East 45th Street.

Another shelter tenant, Melinda Anders, 63, told the New York Daily News, “I heard a lot of screaming and I walked out, went upstairs and seen a lot of blood in the hallway.” “My stomach churned as a result. I heard it from the second story all the way down, and that is something I will never forget.” The assault was apparently captured on surveillance footage, and Croffman is said to have been seen throwing the bloody knife into a street garbage can afterward.

Four days later, after a citywide search, Croffman was located. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig, she is now being held without bond.

At Bellevue Hospital, Goode was declared dead.

According to her brother, Goode relocated to New York City from Oklahoma City five years ago to pursue a career as a runway model. She had recently completed a photo session for VOGUE Mexico, but she was having financial difficulties. She was compelled by this to seek for temporary lodgings by staying in women’s shelters or with friends.

Now that Goode has passed away, members of her family are talking publicly about possible issues she faced at the shelter.

According to the victim’s father, Goode was terrified of her roommate. James Goode, 65, said to the New York Post that “she feared for her life before the attack, that’s what her mother told me.” She repeatedly protested to the shelter and also phoned the police.

The distraught father lamented, “My baby’s gone, my only daughter,” to the Post.

New Providence, the shelter where Goode was killed, is said to have had previous occurrences and resident concerns about security.

A local told the Daily News, “I’m terrified for my life being around this environment. It is not secure. The shelter has not responded to these allegations, however a representative from the 17th Precinct Council of the NYPD stated there were “There were a lot of troubling things [at the shelter], so it’s not surprising that there was a situation like this. We are trying to make things better there.”

Yvonne McNeill, a 57-year-old LGBTQ activist who resided in a shelter, was shot 14 times by police in 2011. (Reports about the events preceding the shooting are contradictory.)

Goode’s brother has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the family’s funeral costs and assistance with returning her remains to Oklahoma. According to authorities, Croffman was detained on Tuesday night and has been charged with murder. It’s unknown whether she’s entered a plea or hired counsel.
