‘Avatar’ anticipated to have biggest global box office debut of year
Avatar and Titanic, two of his movies, are among the top three highest-grossing movies ever. You never, ever bet against James Cameron, is a refrain that appears in the majority of reviews of Avatar: The Way of Water. The director has produced classics over the years that have significantly altered the business.
And it appears that the doubters will be proven wrong once more. It predicts that The Way of Water will have the biggest opening at the global box office this year.
The movie is currently expected to gross between $450 million and $550 million worldwide, with its domestic opening weekend takings expected to be between $150 million and $175 million.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($449 million) had the biggest global debut of the year. With $583 million, Spider-Man: No Way Home from last year currently holds the record for the largest opening weekend during the pandemic.
In its first weekend domestically, Doctor Strange 2 brought in $187 million. If tracking continues, The Way of Water will perform better than blockbusters like The Batman ($134 million), Top Gun: Maverick ($126 million), and Jurassic World Dominion ($145 million) in its opening weekend.
The Water of Water would need to be the third or fourth-biggest film ever made, according to Cameron, who stated as much in a previous interview with GQ. That generally means that any revenue below $2 billion worldwide would be regarded as disappointing. With over $2.9 billion in worldwide box office receipts, the first Avatar is still the highest grossing film of all time.
It’s crucial to keep in mind that the first movie didn’t exactly have a big opening. When it was released a week before Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes in 2009, the movie’s opening weekend gross was less than $80 million.
The Way of Water won’t have to contend with such rivalry; rather, its biggest rival will probably be its own three-hour plus running time. Studios gave it the go-ahead to perform well into 2023 and cleared the runway for it two weeks ago.
When Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hits theatres in February, the movie may encounter its first significant challenge.
The Way of Water is receiving a day-and-date China release, in contrast to most Hollywood films in the post-pandemic era. While sanctions have largely killed off interest in foreign films in the Middle Kingdom, local audiences have continued to find solace in Pandora.
Over the course of several years, China has contributed more than $200 million to the first Avatar. The movie’s most recent re-release brought in $75 million in the United States, allaying any remaining doubts about its cultural relevancy.
The Way of Water, which was made for an estimated $400 million — the figure has been disputed, just like with the first movie — has a lot riding on it.
The third movie will probably be finished and released because Cameron has already finished filming it, but the fourth and fifth movies will only be made if The Way of Water does well.
