‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, director James Cameron’s 13-year-long follow-up to his box office sensation Avatar, is now available.

There’s still time for the movie, even though its opening weekend box office performance fell short of expectations.

Cameron is the person we are referring to. He is one of the few directors who can attract viewers back for additional viewings.

The Way of Water generated a fantastic $435 million this weekend while playing in over 52 foreign locations, including the all-too-rare (for a Hollywood film) China.

That comes in just under the $450 million mark that the movie was anticipated to pass in its first weekend.

The Way of Water will have to settle for second place because it fell short of expectations and fell short of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ $442 million gross, which was the year’s best global opening.

The movie has now grossed $134 million domestically and another $301 million internationally. The Way of Water, which reportedly cost $400 million to produce, would need to make almost $2 billion in worldwide box office revenue to break even, according to a recent statement by director James Cameron.

The first Avatar opened rather weakly with $241 million globally in its first five days of release, but it quickly soared to become the highest-grossing movie ever, earning $760 million domestically and more than $2.9 billion globally.

The Way of Water received a day-and-date release in China, which is unusual for Hollywood films in the post-pandemic era.

There, it performed below expectations with about $57 million by Sunday. The film was initially projected to gross over $100 million in its China launch; this can be largely due to a recent wave of COVID-related closures.

Imports have become less common in recent years due to government restrictions and an expanding domestic market; the only major Hollywood film to be released in China this year was Jurassic World Dominion, which earned over $150 million there.

In China, the first Avatar has made a total of $200 million over the years, and a recent Variety estimate predicted that the sequel would end up making more than $350 million.

The Way of Water, which is set more than ten years after the events of the first film, chronicles the exploits of Jake Sully and his Na’vi partner Neytiri as they struggle to defend their offspring from a vicious enemy that has returned.

The sequel got encouraging A CinemaScore ratings from opening day audiences in addition to favourable reviews. This is encouraging for its future because it allows it to establish itself at the box office for at least a few months without facing any serious opposition.
