Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed more than expectations. This weekend, the movie accomplished many things, including dominating the international IMAX network. At 1,543 screens across 80 locations, Avatar: The Way of Water brought in a staggering $48.8M. The expensive follow-up shattered the previous record for IMAX global openings and currently owns the second-highest-grossing IMAX global weekend and the largest IMAX December global opening ever. 11.2 percent of moviegoers who attended the showing of Avatar: The Way of Water saw it in IMAX.

Avatar: The Way of Water’s success and the IMAX viewing experience were discussed by Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, who also said:

Avatar: The Way of Water produced $16.5 million in North America from IMAX alone, which indicates that IMAX ticket sales made up 12.3% of the movie’s domestic weekend gross and generated over $40,000 per screen on average. International IMAX ticket sales have brought in a total of over $32.3 million for the movie. The blockbuster movie had a $15.8 million domestic gross from 735 IMAX screens, ranking it as China’s fourth-highest IMAX opening weekend ever. The largest IMAX opening ever in India, Belgium, Switzerland, Turkey, Chile, Czech Republic, Vietnam, New Zealand, Romania, Serbia, and Kazakhstan was achieved by Avatar: The Way of Water.

Avatar: The Way of Water was a resounding success, earning $134 million domestically and $434.5 million globally. The movie, a direct sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar, centres on Jake Sully as he battles an old foe to save his new home of Pandora. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaa, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet are the movie’s main actors. The movie was directed by James Cameron, using a screenplay he co-wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The first Avatar movie is the highest-grossing movie of all time, with a total worldwide earnings of $2.923 billion. The IMAX global pre-sale numbers for Avatar: The Way of Water are still quite strong, and the sequel’s box office take is anticipated to rise over the course of the upcoming month.
