‘Barbie’ trailer playing before “Avatar: The Way of Water” screening
‘Barbie‘, Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming masterpiece, is receiving its first look. Gerwig and her boyfriend, Noah Baumbach, wrote the script.
As if the release of Avatar: The Way of Water couldn’t provide us with more intriguing news. Not only do we return to Pandora, but IMAX fans will also be treated to a four-minute short on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. However, new information has just emerged that may top the lot.
According to reports from The Way of Water screenings this evening, the trailer, which stars Margot Robbie as the legendary character based on the Mattel doll, and Ryan Gosling as her other half, Ken, has been playing ahead of the film, and fans are becoming very excited.
The film’s anticipation is truly at fever pitch at this point, and what an incredibly brilliant marketing strategy to pair it with the year’s most anticipated film.
What better approach to encourage people to notice your product than to include it in the sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time? When the first photographs of Robbie and especially Gosling were posted in June, social media was fire, but the buzz would soon reach unsustainable levels.
Gerwig, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her work on Little Women three years ago, has assembled an all-star cast that initially appeared to be a satire.
Fans have been drip-fed salivating soundbites from the performers, including Gosling, who called the script “the best” he’d ever read. “Best script I’ve ever read. I walk out in the backyard [after getting the offer] and, do you know where I found Ken?”
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gosling stated. “[A Ken doll] face down in the mud next to a squished lemon. I texted [the photo] to Greta and said, ‘I shall be your Ken, for this story must be told.’”
America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, and Michael Cera also star in the film, with Will Ferrell as the CEO of Mattel, who is thought to be a potential enemy. Alexandre Desplat, who previously collaborated with Gerwig on Little Women, will score the film.
Barbie is set to hit theatres on July 21, 2023.
