Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series Presumed Innocent, which will be directed by Emmy Award winner David E. Kelly, J.J. Abrams, and Dustin Thomason.
Presumed Innocent was first ordered to series by Apple TV in February 2022 and is based on Scott Turow’s acclaimed 1987 novel of the same name.
It follows the murder of Carolyn Polhemus, which upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys’ office when one of its own is suspected of the crime.
The novel tells the story from the perspective of Kindle County prosecutor and murdered colleague Roat “Rusty” Sabich, who is charged with the murder and tries to keep his marriage together while also clearing his name.
Variety describes Gyllenhaal as a “fervent prosecutor accused of killing his close colleague after evidence begins to point in his direction.”
The previous adaptation of the source material, made in 1990, starred Harrison Ford as Rusty. While Gyllenhaal has had a long and successful film career, including 2001’s Donnie Darko, 2007’s Zodiac, 2013’s Prisoners, Nightcrawler in 2014, and the more recent Ambulance and Strange World, both of which were released in 2022, Presumed Innocent would be his first series regular television project.
The series will be produced by Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and David E. Kelley Productions in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television.
Kelley will be the showrunner as well as an executive producer through his production company. Abrams will executive produce through Bad Robot alongside Rachel Rusch Rich and Ben Stephenson, Bad Robot’s Head of Television.
Sharr White and Gyllenhaal also serve as executive producers, and the original novel’s author Turow, along with Miki Johnson, serves as a co-executive producer through Bad Robot.
Kelly and Thomason, along with Matthew Tinker, will serve as executive producers under the David E. Kelley Productions banner.
Abrams and Thomason previously collaborated on the Hulu series Castle Rock, where Thomason served as co-creator and co-showrunner alongside Abrams as executive producer.
Abrams has also worked as an executive producer for Apple, having done so for the streaming service’s series Little Voice and Lisey’s Story.
He also serves as an executive producer on HBO’s Westworld.
There is no set release date for Presumed Innocent.
