  • James Gunn has returned to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
  • Which will be his final work for Marvel Studios.
  • He feels that the character arcs of all the Guardians, particularly Rocket.

James Gunn, the director, has been quite busy since leaving Marvel Studios to work for DC. Gunn nevertheless provided an explanation of why he felt compelled to return and attempt the third instalment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, citing among other things the movie’s diminutive and armed character.

The director acknowledged the issue of subpar third films in trilogies in a lengthy interview with, but reassured fans that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would depart from the standard third picture template.

He added that there are just not enough great third episodes, saying, “I can count the number of fantastic third episodes in a trilogy on one hand.” Gunn revealed that the third Guardians movie, which will be his final work for Marvel Studios, will highlight the stories of each character.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have always been on his mind, even though he is deeply involved with his most recent endeavour in the DC Universe.

He thinks that the character arcs of all the Guardians, particularly Rocket, with whom he feels the closest affinity, are still unfinished.

When he returned, the director explained: “He explained that there are many reasons why it could be sad for him to leave the trilogy unfinished, but his connection with the anthropomorphic raccoon has been the main one, to which he said: “To me, Rocket has always been the secret protagonist of the Guardians movies. From the beginning, it has been rooted in who he is as a character. I think he exemplifies a lot of the traits of all the Guardians. They’ve had all these traumas, and it brings them together. I just think that his is more extreme than others.”

It’s reasonable to argue that Rocket’s charm outweighs his crude and occasionally selfish demeanour, making him a favorite among fans of the franchise.

In addition, Gunn thinks there is more to Rocket than meets the eye despite his brash demeanour:

“He was just fine being an animal, and he was transformed into something else he didn’t want to be. I think that transformation itself was extremely painful, but I also think it made him feel incredibly alienated from everyone else. In Vol. 3, we learn a lot about his past — where he came from, who he is, and what he’s been through. It’s been a difficult road for the little animal.”

For Marvel Studios, Gunn has directed a number of movies, including Avengers: Infinity War, the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and the impending third entry of the Guardians series.

He was the director of the next Superman movie, which has made quite a commotion online owing to a casting misstep involving Henry Cavill, but that’s a story for another day. He also directed The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and other DC projects.

We now have even more reason to support Rocket just from Gunn’s explanation. He has so far made several excellent promises regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
