  • The only problem is the disparity between the number of women in the cast.

Remakes are frequently the order of the day in today’s world, it is a universally acknowledged fact. It is also acknowledged that the Muppets perform spectacularly when they adapt a well-known story.

Consider the Charles Dickens short story adaptation The Muppet Christmas Carol, which is marking its 30th anniversary this month.

But it appears that the group’s focus may now shift to a different enduring piece of British literature.

The idea of Muppets Pride and Prejudice, a movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice starring Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) and, of course, Miss Piggy, came up during an interview with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and Robin Around the Table series. After all, who else could it be with a working title like Pride and Prejudice and Piggy?

While Kermit the Frog has typically played the romantic lead opposite Miss Piggy over the years—they even gender-flipped Benjamina Gunn’s role in Muppet Treasure Island to make this possible in a story with few to no female characters—it appears that Kermit will take a back seat to Goldstein this time.

If Goldstein could get the movie approved, the multihyphenate amphibian would gladly agree to produce it. Getting the movie approved may not be simple, but when Goldstein’s pull and Miss Piggy’s push are combined, it should be fairly simple.

It’s kind of a no-brainer for Ted Lasso fans to cast Goldstein as Darcy. With an absolutely ooey-gooey heart of gold and eyes for just one firecracker of a woman who takes absolutely none of his nonsense, he appears stern and detached on the outside. Roy Kent and Fitzwilliam Darcy may have more in common than people realise.

From where I’m standing, the only potential problem with the plan is the disparity between the number of women in the cast of Pride and Prejudice and the number of female Muppets.

On the other hand, I doubt that many actors would turn down the chance to play Piggy in Pride and Prejudice. To add that extra meta touch the Muppets are so good at, I humbly suggest pairing Kermit’s Mr. Bingley with Juno Temple, who played Jane Bennet opposite Goldstein’s Ted Lasso co-star Goldstein.

While we wait for this most recent masterful adaptation of a literary classic, we can watch Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ and Miss Piggy’s numerous Muppet movies on Disney+.

Alternately, see the following famous scene from the 1995 adaptation:
