Nick Cannon is remembering a challenging choice he had to make for his late son.

Zen Scott, the infant son of the TV personality and Alyssa Scott, died in 2021 at the age of just 5 months as a result of a brain tumour. Zen was offered chemotherapy by the physicians, as Nick has recently detailed, but declined it for a number of reasons.

“They pretty much told me that best case scenario, your son could live to 3 or 4 years old,” Nick recalled during the Dec. 12 episode of The Checkup with Dr. David Agus. “So instantly when I heard that, I thought, quality of life. I wanted him to have the best existence he could have.”

“Seeing your son hooked up to all of those machines—and he had to go for a shunt two or three times, and that was heartbreaking every time—even in that short amount of time, I couldn’t imagine him having to go through chemo,” Nick said. “I knew how as a full grown man, that process. I wouldn’t even call it pain. It just sucked everything out of you. I couldn’t imagine that on a newborn and what that would do.”

Nick also had concerns about how Zen’s days would be spent having to “live in the hospital” if they chose to move forward with the treatment. Nick noted, “He would have never gone home.”

Zen passed dead on December 5, 2021, the comic stated on The Nick Cannon Show in December 2021. Nick recalled holding Zen “for the last time” while with Alyssa on the ocean when he described their last moments together.

Zen passed away a year ago today, and Nick wrote a piece to commemorate the occasion by reflecting on what he called the “toughest day” of his life.

“Losing a child has to be the heaviest, most dark and depressive experiences that I will never get over,” Nick wrote on Instagram Dec. 5. “A mixture of guilt, pain, and sorrow is what I suppress daily. I love hard, I love big and I love with my entire Heart and Soul and I just wish my Little Man could’ve felt more of that love while he was here on Earth.”

The star’s 12th child—Alyssa and Nick’s second child—is now due. He also has a 5-year-old son named Golden “Sagon,” 11-year-old twins named Monroe and Moroccan, and With Brittany Bell, they have a 23-month-old daughter named Powerful Queen and a 2-month-old son named Rise Messiah; with Abby De La Rosa, they have 18-month-old twin sons named Zion and Zillion and a newborn daughter named Beautiful Zeppelin; with Bre Tiesi, they have a 5-month-old son named Legendary Love and a 3-month-old daughter named Onyx Ice.
