The first season of the American television drama ‘Professionals‘, starring Tom Welling and Brendan Fraser, just ended.

A Season 2 renewal is still up in the air, despite the duo taking the lead. The 2012 motion picture Soldiers of Fortune serves as the inspiration for the series.

It centres on Vincent Corbo (Welling), an ex-counterintelligence agent who is hired by Dr. Graciela Davila (Elena Anaya), the fiancée of millionaire Peter Swann (Fraser), to look into a possible act of sabotage when a medical satellite bursts during launch.

The show was shot in South Africa and Ireland back in 2019. After being purchased by The CW in 2021, it made its American debut in October with a 10-episode first season.

Nearly all of The CW’s scripted series have recently been cancelled, which raises the issue of whether a second season of Professionals will be ordered.

The season finale of the show received 290K/0.0 viewers, which was a fairly poor rating for the show. However, as observed by TVLine, Fraser and his current career trajectory, specifically The Whale, may be a significant renewal factor.

Although it’s not completely impossible that Fraser would come back for a second season, it’s hard to picture him going back to a network with uncertain programming future.

Fraser is also moving toward a probable Oscar nomination and win thanks to the positive response to his performance in The Whale and his Golden Globe nomination. As a result, it is more likely that he would continue to be a popular actor in blockbuster movies and more prestigious television shows.

In a similar vein, Fraser is currently a series regular in the fourth-season episode of the HBO Max show Doom Patrol. The show has a committed fan base that has kept it continuing thus far, despite the fact that it hasn’t been renewed or cancelled yet.

Should it be renewed for a fifth season, it has also garnered positive reviews from both critics and public viewers, making it distinct as the television project Fraser would remain with first. In addition, he is working on additional projects, such as Brothers and Killers of the Flower Moon, that may have an effect on the decision to extend the Professionals.

The team is optimistic despite the show’s uncertain future, according to co-creator Jeff Most, who told TVLine that they are “excited to make a second season, and are far along in planning the storyline.”

The majority also stated that they are “working closely with [their] broadcast partners,” but they have not yet gotten any definitive assurances. At this point, Most has not provided any information about a possible Season 2 storyline.

Most and Michael Colleary co-created Professionals, ran the show, and served as executive producers. The Republic of Ireland and South Africa jointly produced it, and Rainmaker Content is in charge of distribution for LEONINE Studios.

Sad Taghmaoui, Ken Duken, Lisa Loven Kongsli, August Wittgenstein, Stevel Marc, Tanya Van Graan, and Nic Rasenti are included in the supporting cast.

On The CW’s website and app, you can watch Professionals Season 1.
