  • James Gunn has assured fans that Superman is still a top priority for DC Films.

Superman fans have been on an epic emotional rollercoaster in recent weeks, and the ride is far from over. After a five-year hiatus from seeing Henry Cavill in his super suit, the actor finally delivered when he reprised his role as Kal-El for a theater-shaking mid-credits appearance in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

Following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s appointments as chief executives at DC Studios, Cavill then followed up with an official announcement of his return to the role, ushering in a new era for the DC legacy.

However, earlier this week, reports surfaced claiming that Cavill’s highly anticipated Man of Steel 2 could be in jeopardy, along with a slew of other DC projects.

Only a few days after Gunn vaguely stated that “some of it [the report] is true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not,” the DC Films president has assured that the Kryptonian hero is still a top priority for the studio.

When a Twitter follower inquired, “Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”

His remarks come after a shocking report from the cast doubt on DC’s previously bright future. According to the report: “The first, which builds on the shuttering of Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3, is the closing curtain of the Snyderverse, and the heroes cast by filmmaker Zack Snyder for his Justice League. This one sees the shutting down of Man of Steel 2, with a returning Henry Cavill, and having no more Aquaman, fronted by Jason Momoa.”

According to the report, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, and Henry Cavill’s Superman were all set to appear in a cameo in the studio’s upcoming The Flash film, but this could be scrapped. “There is a debate inside the studio as whether or not to keep the cameo and if its inclusion promises something that studio would have no plans on delivering,” according to the report.

Cavill has dominated headlines since his official return as the most powerful hero on the planet in Black Adam. “We should talk,” Superman says to Kahndaq’s protector Teth Adam in the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene. Johnson later revealed that he campaigned behind the scenes for Cavill’s return, resulting in a last-minute shoot for Cavill’s half of the scene. In fact, the scene was filmed just a month before the film’s release, which was a month before the movie’s release.

Given that the cameo did indeed appear in the film, as well as Cavill’s official announcement, it’s difficult to believe the studio would be willing to backtrack on such a major announcement.

As of now, Superman’s fate remains unknown, but Gunn’s optimism is a hopeful sign of things to come.
